AI-assisted knowledge distillation

Method · Pivot

Knowledge distillation, as practised here, emulates how historians work with primary and secondary materials: breaking them into manageable units, identifying claims and evidence, comparing them across texts, and building interpretations at progressively higher levels of abstraction.

The middle made legible

AI agents first divide classical prose into logical sections according to themes, temporal markers, and changes in argumentative mode. Each section is then analyzed in relation to interpretive dimensions teased out from recurring features in the primary sources: argumentative structure, rhetorical movement, epistemological claims, intellectual affiliation, aesthetic judgment, and historical interpretation. Section-level analyses are combined into essay-level accounts, and selected essays or sections can be synthesized into a provisional profile of an individual scholar.

One distilled record

An intermediate record is a scholarly object, not backend data. It states what the passage says, what the model inferred, who revised it, and which record depends on it.

Why a pivot · names the point at which accumulated understanding turns into generative form: a mechanism, a crucial moment, a hinge. The submark is that point lifted out of the master symbol—the last units of the principal stroke below the articulation, the lean above it, and the first units of the branch. It marks the places on this site where one form of knowledge becomes another, and it is never used as decoration.

A claim and its return

Su Shi gives priority to internalised understanding over procedure.

Section record · PH.REC.000217Knowing precedes doing; the object of knowledge is a whole, not a sum of parts.
Essay account · PH.REC.000231Across the essay, the argument moves from the botany of bamboo to the psychology of execution and finally to friendship and loss. The passage above is its conceptual hinge: the essay’s later remarks on failure (心識其所以然而不能然) depend on the whole-before-parts claim made here.
Su Shi 蘇軾, “Record of Wen Yuke’s Painting of the Bent Bamboos of Yundang Valley” 文與可畫篔簹谷偃竹記故畫竹必先得成竹於胸中,執筆熟視,乃見其所欲畫者,急起從之,振筆直遂,以追其所見,如兔起鶻落,少縱則逝矣。

Activate the Pivot beside the claim: a faint path leaves it, the records it rests on unfold, and the last of them is the passage itself. Nothing set in lapis is more authoritative than the source it depends on.

Working translation

Therefore, to paint bamboo one must first have the complete bamboo in the breast. Take up the brush and look intently; then what one wishes to paint appears. Rise quickly and follow it, moving the brush straight through to catch what was seen—like a hare starting, a falcon stooping. Slacken for a moment and it is gone.

What distillation is not

Here knowledge distillation refers not to the compression of one machine-learning model into another, but to the machine-assisted construction of progressively more synthetic interpretations. Higher-order interpretations are more synthetic, not more authoritative; a scholar profile is corpus-conditioned and provisional. The interpretation is articulated, not assembled.

Because historical interpretation is not a matter of arriving at a final right or wrong answer, readings of individual passages reshape the provisional understanding of a text, author, or controversy — and that provisional whole redirects attention to particular sources. Historians can revise the segmentation, accept or reject a classification, modify the taxonomy, or reconsider the profile; new texts enter at the relevant layer and the levels above are recomputed and compared with earlier versions.

Traceability

The method preserves the distinction between what a text explicitly states and what a model infers, and each conclusion can be returned to the relevant passage. Every result can be returned to a specific location in an authoritative primary or secondary source. This traceability is essential for establishing trust with the academic community that evaluates the results.

The machine edition

The distilled records, their versions and the procedures that produced them are published as a working edition at pivot.playingheaven.ai, beginning with Su Shi. It is an edition of the same objects the prose discusses, laid out for reading rather than for inspection of a system.
